At J.M. Whitney Insurance, we’ve seen it all—storms that rattle rooftops, business setbacks, and unexpected bumps in the road. But what we’ve also seen—and what keeps us showing up every day—is the resilience of the people we serve, and how even the smallest gestures of support can turn a tough season into a story worth telling.

This is one of those stories.

A Little Setback Before the Holiday Season

Just outside of Watertown, the Lawson family had been planning to host Thanksgiving in their newly renovated home for the first time. The leaf-strewn walkway, freshly painted shutters, and kitchen remodel had all come together just in time. They had family flying in from Colorado, a turkey on reserve at the butcher, and place cards already laid out for the kids to decorate.

But one chilly Sunday morning in early November, a pipe in their mudroom burst unexpectedly, flooding part of the main floor. Flooring warped. The cabinetry swelled. And worst of all, the newly installed oven—set to host its first-ever feast—was damaged beyond repair.

What should’ve been a joyful lead-up to Thanksgiving suddenly turned into a scramble.

One Call, and a Familiar Voice

In the middle of it all, Rachel Lawson remembered something her father had always told her: “Call Curtis. He’ll know what to do.”

She did just that.

Curtis picked up on the second ring—calm, collected, and with the kind of steadiness you don’t realize you need until you hear it. Within an hour, he had filed the proper claims, connected the family with vetted restoration professionals, and even offered a temporary kitchen appliance vendor he personally vouched for.

More than that, he checked in that evening and again the next morning. “Just making sure you’ve got a stovetop for those mashed potatoes,” he joked.

What Gratitude Really Means

The Lawsons had their insurance claim processed quickly. Adjusters were fair. Help arrived fast. By Thanksgiving morning, the mudroom was dry, a temporary oven was installed, and the house smelled like sage, butter, and gratitude.

“We may have had a little folding table and some takeout stuffing,” Rachel said with a laugh, “but we were together. And it was perfect. Curtis didn’t just help with the paperwork—he helped us keep the holiday spirit alive.”

For Us, It’s Personal

For Curtis—and for all of us at J.M. Whitney—this work is about more than policies and paperwork. It’s about being there in the moments that matter, the ones that are fragile, funny, frustrating, and full of heart. We’re lucky to be in a business that lets us protect not just homes and businesses, but the traditions that live within them.

So this November, as the leaves fall and the season of togetherness begins, we’re raising a toast to all of you—our clients, our neighbors, our community.
